The Epoch-Viewer is a multi purpose annotation and presentation tool set. It represents a simple solution to a quite complex problem: the annotation of 3D obejcts.
Important paragraphs in texts can be highlighted with a pen. Interesting parts in photos can be marked. But what about 3D objects?
In the field of cultural heritage it is common to work with 3D objekts as a basis. From there on, additional material is generated: texts and images describing the objects and their history. There are many methods for retrieving 3D data sets from the actual objects. This data is then used for presentations, but also for analysis and archival of the real artifacts. Each of those scenarios has some special requirements but all of them need a connection of 3D data and additional material.
This tool set is based on OpenSG for the 3D visualization and the Generative Modeling Language (GML) for scripting. The XML-based Collada file format is used as a container format for the 3D data and the annotations. The 3D model is kept in its optimized file format. Annotations constist of the following:
For describing the location an the dimension of the annotation a simple geometry is defined. In the first implementation of the tool set we use a sphere for this purpose. Other geometry representations may follow.
To show some part of a model it is important to choose a suitable point of view. Each annotation has it own camera definition.
